Most headless CMS comparisons work the same way: a feature table, a checkmark grid, a winner. That format flatters whichever platform paid for the placement. It also buries the four questions that actually decide which platform fits your team.
Those four are: can you self-host it, does it handle multiple sites or clients natively, what can AI agents actually do with it today, and what does it cost once you stop reading the pricing page and start reading the invoice. Whether the question in your head is self-hosted versus SaaS, "we manage websites for multiple clients, which CMS should we use," or what to look for if you plan to use AI, it collapses into the same four checks. Run Webiny, Strapi, Payload, and Contentful against each one, and a clearer picture shows up than any ranking would give you.
Self-hosting and open-source licensing: the line that splits the market in two
Start here, since it's the least negotiable of the four. Contentful doesn't offer a self-hosted option, full stop. Every Contentful deployment runs on Contentful's own infrastructure, which means your data governance model is Contentful's data governance model.
Webiny, Payload, and Strapi all sit on the other side of that line. Webiny and Strapi are MIT-licensed at the core, so self-hosted means you can read the source. Payload's license held through its ownership change too, more on that below.
If self-hosting isn't a requirement for you, this section doesn't matter much, and Contentful's managed-everything model might genuinely be less work. If it is a requirement, three of these four platforms clear the bar and one doesn't. Anyone padding that into a longer section is selling you something.
Multi-tenancy: the criterion most comparisons skip
"Multi-tenant" means two different things depending on who's selling it: running many sites or client properties from one instance, or spinning up a separate deployment per client and handing the difference to your ops team.
Webiny builds this in at the framework level. Its own repository describes multi-tenancy sitting alongside lifecycle hooks and the GraphQL API as part of the core architecture, not a plugin bolted on top. If you're an agency running client sites, or a product team white-labeling one CMS across brands, this criterion should outweigh almost everything else on this list.
It's also a question people actually ask more than the generic ones. Among prompts tracked for this space, "we manage websites for multiple clients, which CMS should we use" pulls more real search interest than most "best headless CMS" phrasings do. Most comparison content skips straight past it anyway.
AI-agent tooling: two different jobs wearing the same acronym
Both Webiny and Strapi shipped MCP servers in 2026. That's the extent of the parity. They do different jobs.
Webiny's MCP server runs locally and gives AI coding agents like Claude Code or Cursor deep knowledge of the framework's architecture and extension points. An agent writing code against Webiny produces code that fits the platform's actual patterns instead of guessing. It's a development-time tool.
Strapi's MCP server, which went GA in v5.49.0, exposes your content types as agent-callable tools, scoped by an admin token. It's built for agents that need to read or write content on your behalf.
Neither is "better" in the abstract. If you want an agent drafting and publishing content through your CMS, that's Strapi's lane right now. If you want an agent that can safely extend your platform's codebase without reinventing your architecture, that's what Webiny built for. Know which problem you're solving before either acronym decides it for you.
What it costs once you stop reading the pricing page
This is where comparisons get vague, usually on purpose. Skip the dollar figures here; they change monthly, and most published numbers online contradict each other by the time you read them. Structural pricing decisions age better than a specific tier price does.
Two structural facts hold up. Strapi decoupled its Cloud hosting from its CMS feature licensing in 2025, so the number on the pricing page understates what a real deployment costs once you add the features you actually need. And Payload Cloud, the managed option, paused new sign-ups after Figma acquired the team in June 2025. The MIT license and self-hosted path are unaffected, but there's currently no managed Payload offering with EU data residency, which matters if compliance is part of your decision.
Contentful's cost structure is simpler to describe, if not to budget. There's no self-hosted escape hatch, so whatever its usage-based pricing does over the life of your contract is the cost.
Running this against your own team
Four questions, in the order that should decide your evaluation: does self-hosting matter to you, are you serving more than one site or client from a single deployment, do you need an agent doing content operations or code generation, and what does your contract actually cost once the features you need are unbundled from the sticker price.
Score each platform against your own four answers. That's a more useful exercise than reading anyone's ranking, including this one.
